Founders at the University of Cambridge - START Supporting early-stage founders through funding and acceleration

Founders at the University of Cambridge – START

ACCELERATING POTENTIAL.

Founders at the University of Cambridge is a strategic initiative delivered by Cambridge Enterprise to support the creation and growth of startups emerging from University research and innovation.

Its flagship START programme is a pre‑seed accelerator designed to help early‑stage ventures move from idea or research to investment‑ready companies. The programme supports founders connected to the University, providing capital, mentoring, and access to a global network of experts, investors, and partners.

START combines funding with an intensive, structured programme focused on building strong foundations for growth. Founders work through key areas such as strategy, product–market fit, customer development, and fundraising. The programme is delivered in stages, typically progressing from strategic planning to customer validation and finally to investor readiness and pitching.

Participants receive early-stage funding (with guaranteed capital at entry and potential follow-on investment), alongside extensive mentoring from Entrepreneurs‑in‑Residence and domain experts. The programme culminates in an Investor Day, where startups pitch to a large network of investors from across the ecosystem.

By combining venture-building support, funding, and access to networks, START helps founders accelerate their progress and prepare for further investment.
