The Bridge supports academics to apply their expertise to the world’s most pressing problems

The Bridge Initiative

The Bridge is a powerful tool for engaging the global ecosystem of thought leaders and influencers in the College’s areas of strength in research translation and impact.

The Bridge supports researchers (whether senior academics, postdocs or students) to apply their expertise to some of the world’s most pressing problems through improved connections with policy-makers, industry leaders, practitioners and professionals in many sectors and countries. The Bridge engages students more widely through talks, guest lectures and discussions, all emphasising the importance of innovation to the challenges facing humanity, and the role the College community can play in creating a future that benefits all.

Within The Bridge, there are four distinct Centres – each focused on using knowledge and insight from research to effect beneficial change in the world. These are:

• Oracy Cambridge

• Cambridge Digital Innovation

• The Centre for Climate Engagement

• The Digital Education Futures Initiative

Smaller projects are also supported, particularly in the areas of health, education and digital/AI technologies.

A key component of the Bridge is the Impact Leadership Programme which targets transferable skills and experiences to complement academic research training. It is open to a small annual cohort of postdoctoral researchers and second and third-year PhD students at Hughes. Participants are encouraged to reflect deeply about their paths, take ownership of change, and translate their learning into practice.
