University of Cambridge Office for Translational Research

The Office for Translational Research (OTR)

The Office for Translational Research (OTR) supports researchers across the University of Cambridge and its associated NHS hospitals in turning promising research into new therapies, medical devices, diagnostics, digital health technologies, and other interventions that can improve patient care.

Hosted within the School of Clinical Medicine, OTR helps bridge the gap between discovery research and real-world healthcare impact. Working across the translational pathway, the team supports researchers in identifying the most effective route for developing and advancing their innovations, particularly during the early stages of translation when ideas are moving from the laboratory towards practical application.

The OTR provides hands-on support throughout the translational process. Its team acts as internal consultants, helping researchers assess where their project sits within the development pathway, make strategic connections, access funding opportunities, and navigate the scientific, commercial, and regulatory challenges involved in translation. Through initiatives such as translational project funding schemes, project management support, the MedTech Regulatory Hub, and industry and clinical partnerships, OTR helps researchers progress innovations towards patient benefit.

The office also plays an important convening role, connecting researchers with clinicians, industry partners, funders, regulatory experts, and other stakeholders needed to move projects forward. By combining funding, expertise, and practical project support, OTR helps accelerate the journey from research discovery to healthcare innovation.
